DESCRIPTION
This area is named after the Theewaterskloof dam near Villiersdorp, the largest dam in the region and main source of water to Cape Town. In addition, the dam offers excellent fishing and water sports. Or you could go on a 4x4 fynbos Mountain Eco Tour, do some bird watching or hit a few birdies at the fabulous Theewaterkloof Country Club Resort. To the south of the dam is Grabouw, renowned for its apples (produces 65% of South Africa’s export crop). Between Grabouw and Villiersdorp lies the Hottentots-Holland Nature Reserve, an important area for the protection of mountain fynbos and small populations of rhebok, klipspringer common duiker and grysbok. The wildlife can be observed from two hiking trails. Mountain biking is another option. Crank it up along winding single tracks through pine plantations and diverse terrain. Bot River lies at the foot of the Houw Hoek Mountains and the Bot River Lagoon is very popular with water sport enthusiasts and bird watchers. The N2 (eastbound) will bring you to Caledon, a medium sized agricultural centre. The restored buildings and oak lined streets of Greyton contribute to the interesting and peaceful character of this little country town. Greyton is situated on the slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains and is a popular retreat. The Greyton Nature Reserve boasts mountain fynbos and proteas as well as various antelope and it is from here that you can start your 16km walk along the Bushmanskloof Trail where you can bear witness to nine crystal clear waterfalls!
