| DESCRIPTION | | The Drakenstein area is home to the two Boland towns of Paarl and Wellington. Paarl got its name from the pearl-like appearance of the granite domes of the Paarl Mountain, the most prominent feature of the surrounding landscape. Paarl is well known for its wine, especially the wines from KWV and Nederburg. Another prominent feature is the Afrikaans Language Monument, set high on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. Just north of Paarl is Wellington, the centre of the dried fruit industry. With the opening of the Bains Kloof Pass in 1840, this town became the gateway to the Cape interior. A trip through the Limiet Mountains via the spectacular Bains Kloof Pass (R303) is highly recommended.
